A Message from the Minister of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan

The subject of agriculture and biotechnology is selected to feature the March issue, in which we showcase the groundbreaking research in rice molecular breeding, papaya gene transformation, and beneficial microbial preparations.  Also included among other updates is a success story of our international talent incubation program. Dr. Alex Ma, the Taiwanese recipient of 2019 Academy Technical Achievement Award, shares his story about how MOST incubation grants has paved his way to success.

I grew up in a rural village in Yunlin, the agricultural capital of Taiwan, where I spent my childhood in plowing and sowing and learned to reap a harvest I had toiled for. My landed experience has a tremendous impact on the philosophy that guides my work. As much as we cultivate the fields, we nurture talents by providing them with sufficient resources and favorable environment. While the research on agriculture enriches our experience with the land and ecosystem, our national and international talent policies embody our commitment to the future. Both showcase the current action plans of MOST on research initiatives and international programs. By working together to expand the impact of our partnerships, I look forward to sharing ripe harvest with you when the spring calls forth a vibrant earth.
