As we know, large volumes of data are being collected on an explosive scale in a broad range of application areas. Data Science approaches to such Big Data deliver amazing value and can drive nearly every aspect of our life, including retail, finance, manufacturing, life sciences, etc. As Minister of MOST, the leading agency of science and technology promotion, I always take it as my duty to encourage researchers in Taiwan to devote themselves to important areas like this.

The subject featured in the June issue highlights the state-of-the-art findings of the data science research in Taiwan on advanced data analytics techniques and innovative applications in various domains, including an evolutionary learning platform for the identification of cancer biomarker signatures, data science techniques for production management and process diagnosis in manufacturing systems, optimization methods of neural architecture searching for AI model design, text mining of large-scale fine-grained opinions for social trading, and winning price prediction in real-time bidding auctions for online advertising. I hope this series of distinguished works in Taiwan can trigger experts around the world to work together to create more amazing discoveries in a wide range of aspects of data science!
